Back in Los Angeles w/ a new bike.

Just arrived home in Los Angeles for a shoot after being all over the East Coast for a month to find this little beauty waiting for me. I talked with the dudes at MacNeil about a bike but honestly forgot they were sending me one. Its a 26″ cruiser in a very similar color scheme to a CycleCraft 24″ cruiser I raced in the late 80s (my mom has the photos somewhere I’m sure). Thanks MacNeil! Lots of photos from our east coast summer very soon.

“those are big”

It’s been a great week. Eli’s been hanging out in the parks of NYC, we’ve been seeing photos of billboards we shot for Smirnoff popping up all over the world, we may be traveling to the other side of the world next week, our assistant is running topless in Levi’s ads all over NY, there was a surprise birthday party for me in BKLYN, another rooftop jam in the BK, we’ve reunited with so many great east coast friends, AND we’re going to the Sussex County Fair Friday! Let’s keep this going.

(news)

We just got the issue of The Wire we shotMadlib for and it looks incredible! We are super excited, one because we love The Wire, two because they chose so many photos to run full page, three because we never get cover shoots so that’s exciting in itself, and four because it was such an awesome day. Check out bad scans of the layout and larger photos after the jump… plus a bonus outtake I dug.

In other news we just photographed Mariachi El Bronx in downtown Los Angeles for some Australian magazines and general press. We also shot ex members of Panic at the Disco Ryan Ross & Jon Walker in the studio for their new project. It also looks like we’ll be spending the rest of the summer in NYC, more on that soon.

Oh, and that contest is ending any minute now.

What a gift!

We received one of the most amazing, unexpected gifts in the mail today. A full set of Where the Wild Things Are decks from Girl. Thanks Andy!! Thanks Spike! Can’t wait to see this friggin’ film.

Summertime.

Although it’s 60 degrees and rainy today in Los Angeles I can’t help be excited knowing summer is here. You could say it’s summer all year round here but something changes in people attitudes when the actual season hits. Lot’s of great backyard happenings, like this one the other weekend.

PDN Photo Annual 2009 winners.

We just got word that we are winners in the advertising category of the 2009 PDN Photo Annual for the work we did last summer for Converse in Portland. So stoked to be a part of it, it’s one contest that I’ve always paid attention to but never entered. In fact, this is the only contest we’ve ever entered and honestly probably would have forgotten to if it wasn’t for the constant reminders from our amazing reps. So, thank you ladies for putting the pressure on. It’s not that we’re lazy (even though we bought a brand new car in January of last year that has yet to be washed), it’s just for some reason we never think about it. It’s hard sometimes to turn off what you’re doing right now and sit down and look over older work, we’d much rather be shooting new stuff than showing what we’ve already done. But you have to sometimes and I’m glad we did. Maybe we were just secretly scared of losing? Who knows, but what I do know is it feels great to see your photos somewhere other than your book or computer screen and feels even greater when someone else likes what you’re up to and gives you a trophy for it. Is that what we get, a trophy? I’ll let you know. Working with Converse (and Brandon) over the last year has been so much fun and by the looks of it people are digging what’s been coming out of it. Maybe we’ll remember to enter another contest soon.

A weekend in North Carolina.

Last weekend we went to North Carolina to attend our friends Jimmy & Eleanor’s wedding. We have some great friends here from that area so it was great see where they all came from and party on their turf. Breaking into hotel banquet rooms to play charades, a beautiful wedding, a dance party in a castle, tons of fireworks, and AK-47s make for a great weekend.

Clarity.

So stoked to see Jimmy Eat World tonight. For those that don’t know it’s the 10 year anniversary of their Clarity album so they decided to tour and play it in its entirety. The album brings back so many amazing memories of going to school in Boston, living in a 400 square foot 3 bedroom apartment with at times 7 other students (Claire being the only girl). There were multiple bangs on the door to tell us to turn it down. Can’t wait. The above photo we shot a couple years back for J.E.W’s Work single.

Made for Skate.

Our buddy Raymond brought us a couple of these last night. That’s our photo of Pops, on the cover! I think it’s just the special Converse cover but still, looks amazing I think. It’s a book on the history of skate shoes and it’s almost as good as Disposable. Almost. Look for it!
