This was the scene driving down the mountain from Big Bear yesterday. Three times we were stopped for a half an hour because a truck or car or both had slid off the road. We attempted to leave the day before but it was even worse with 2 feet of new snow, white out conditions and avalanches blocking the road. All of this 2 hours away from our sunny home in Los Angeles. Lots of photos after the jump, most of Eli learning to sled.

Snow Summit vegan snack. Bun, mustard and red peppers.

The Chocolate Moose Chalet with friends, most who left Sunday before the big storm.

Morning coffee with The Farley.

Claire on Eli’s favorite toy.

Farley breaking free from the chains.

Little Bear in Big Bear.

Eli molesting Little Bear.

The sissy hybrid looked slightly tough with snow chains.

14 month old sled shred.

Nicole got stuck with us.

This is the point where we should have started thinking about leaving but sledding was just too good.

Roads are closed. Get a room, have a beer.

New cabin for the night. Started getting a little stir crazy.

Stranded Indian food, so good.

They don’t have normal snow plows up there.

Obama telling us we won’t all be broke someday.

Frozen gloves.

LA bound.

Stranded.

First time we were stopped for 45 minutes because of a tanker truck sliding off the road.

Second time stopped because of a stuck U-Haul truck and another tanker stuck trying to go around him.

Chains off!

We made it.
