So here it is… (The contest)

Bam! And you say goddamn, this is a dope jam? OK, enough Public Enemy.
Back to the contest.
We honestly had no idea when we decided to give away our old camera for a print from someone how big this contest would actually get. Over 1600 people sent in photos, 5 photos per person. Meaning, we looked at over 8000 images to get it down the the final 5. Scratch that, 10. We decided to each pick 5, don’t get mad… it’s our contest for our camera and we didn’t want to argue.
People from all over the world sent in stuff and we want to thank every one of you for taking the time to do so, I wish we had 100 of these cameras to give away. There was a lot of great stuff but what it came down to is what would we love to have big hanging on our wall (that was the whole point remember) and here they are in no particular order after the jump. (images can be clicked to see a bigger version).

Erik Schmahl.

Brett Rhoades

Ted Pushinsky.

Jo Galvin.

Marije Kuiper.

Marina Rosso.

Nicholas Lorden.

Wes Cummings.

Wes Frazer.

Richmond Lam.
THE VOTING IS DONE!!!! IT WRAPPED UP AT 1PM TODAY. Brett Rhoades is the winner by 2 votes, holy crap! The 40 people who wrote in names after the polls closed might have made the outcome different but it’s too late. The one week of voting is up, thanks to everyone who participated by sending in photos, voting, spreading the word etc. Congratulations Brett, email us your address.
Correction: 1 vote, how did someone vote after the polls closed? Tricky.
P.S. Please stop writing in names.
Cheers,
Jeremy & Claire Weiss/Day19.

fuck this is hard.
Go Wes Frazer!
#6 reminds me of a felini film. love it.
rhoades for shoades! love their expressions and the framing. i don’t know why it feels like washington but…
all those pictures are not really my cup of tea (I always thought pictures should blow the viewer away or they should have a wow effect) but I guess it all depends of your personal taste-anyways, I voted for one because I thought its just fair-good luck!
^ way.
^^ way hard.
wes frazer’s photo is a beauty, should be on the cover of surfer magazine!
any way to see all five entries from each finalist? only seeing one photo from each forces you to choose which photo you like, as opposed to which photographer.
super hard!
TED PUSHINSKY ALL THE WAY!!!!!
oh i thought this contest was to find amateur photographers with not budget to get a a dslr.
seems like all these photographers are already professionals.
word.
That’s the point. It’s one photo we get a print of unless they want to give us the whole series!
I like all the photos, but I am a bit suprised to not see a wider variety of styles…with 8000 pics…
guess just a little bitter didn’t get picked:)
but honestly its a free camera, so props to you and the contest…
Nice. really cool way to get folks involved. I see one that clearly should be blown up, but thanks for the contest D19…
so stoked, you got some great submissions.
all of the photos are pretty amazing!
WES CUMMINGS ALL THE WAY!!!!!! !!!!!!!!
#1 #1 #1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WES WES WES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
richmond lam. hits the spot, excellent subject.
Good Lordon that’s excellent!
hahah – whoops! meant to vote for Frazer! Good Frazer that’s excellent!
i dont like any of these. none seem very interesting and a bunch of them seem to be soft on the focus.
It was between Wes Frazer and Ted Pushinsky. Goddamn, both of those are great prints….
…I ended up voting for Frazer. No disrespect to Pushinsky. That’s a great fucking photo of Andre and the fans.
oh, you guys really have a style that you like! there’s a very solid visual thread here. v. fashionable. not the sort of work i produce, but i like it.
i say Nicholas Lorden, boys of summer, dreamsville, love it.
Richmond Lam’s photo is the only one that made me cry. Sorry folks, but I’m a slave to my emotions!
Tough decisions…some excellent work! I vote for Wes. That image could have been made with a DSLR or a camera phone; which is irrelevant and another reason I love it. I hope it was shot with a camera phone and the 5D goes to someone who actually needs it. It’s clearly not all about the camera and everybody is a winner here.
andre the giant!
needs to be a tie richmond land’s photo is amazing as well.
WES FRAZER!!!! so great….love the negative space!!!!
Richmond Lam gets my vote, anyone would be very lucky to get it.. good luck =]
Wes, hands down. I’d love it on my wall and dream away.
Richmond came in second. =)
i really think wes frazer’s photo stands out!
it is fantastic!
wes you can!
Great selection. Thanks for being the kind of photographers that give back. Unfortunately not to me but I’m okay with that. Thanks again for the contest and good luck to everybody.
Marije Kuiper’s photo takes me back to another time…growing up in D.C.. It personally moves me more than the others…
I am very disappointed. If this is the best of 8000 images heaven help the new crop of photographers. The only one that looks like any creative though went into it is Wes Frazer. What happen to the standards, WOW factor, subject impact, emotional impact, technical excellent, just to name a few criteria. I have been judging photos for over 30 years and I can’t believe this is the best the world has to offer. Anyway thank you for having this contest I think it was a great idea.
All terrific, but Wes Frazer’s photograph is so evocative that I now am grumbling about being stuck at my desk on a computer.
For me, hands down, Ted Pushinsky’s Andre the Giant, although the competition is fierce.
Brett Rhoades’ wide eyed baby rules although we wish it was in monochrome with a slight tilt shift.
Marije! Love your picture
Wes Frazer for sure!
Ted and Wes but Ted
everyone deserves it… but i like the granpa and granny shot – real!
Doesn’t really seem like any of these people need a 5D…
I wish I had three votes! ★Marije Kuiper, ☆Wes Cummings, ★Marina Rossa. I like these, but I have to agree with some others at my surprise – I was expecting a little less professional looking stuff – a little more ‘I need this camera.’ I mean, not just in quality but in subject matter (great photo, but Andre?). Regardless, this is a great thing thing. I guess this is just evidence that it got even bigger than anyone expected. Kudos!
haha, typo. “great thing” not “thing thing”
Great photos though.
i vote for erik schmahl
i cant understand everyone saying they were expecting amateur photos. You can take great photos even with a point and shoot if you know what you are doing and what you want your final product to look like.
even if some are using SLR cameras, you can buy them for relatively inexpensive and photoshop the results if you arent completely satisfied. its easy to get a good picture if you are a good photographer no matter what you use.
the Lam photo is fantastic. very cute grandparents. great expressions and outfits ;p
congrats to everyone whose entry even got shown on the day19 blog, that in itself is quite special.
of course the rest of us are sad it wasn’t ours, but its great that you all get this exposure even (and honor of being fanned by day19)
what…these are the top 5? lol. a picture of a basketbal goal outside a cheap house? a picture of a family climbing up a sand dune? come on, are they serious? i thought this contest was going to be run by someone that has some true artistic taste. these are just photos that might be on istockphoto.com, but every photographer knows that the people who run that arent artistic at all
these are bad choices, and the last time i participate in anything runby Day19…it’s obviously not serious about its work.
p.s. – i am not bitter that my photo did not make the top 5…i just know 100% without a doubt there are better photos that werent chosen after looking at these.
@crobs808 Hahaha, if you can’t tell the difference between istock photos and these we have no help for you. And after going to your blog (http://corusa.com) and reading this…”Well, as Christians we know there is no such thing as a human that is born homosexual, that in fact all men and women are straight, yet some have a “homosexual problem.” I know for a fact we really can’t help you!!!
I’m sure there are people who are bitter about their photos not being chosen, but I think it’s great of you to even give away your old camera. I voted for the photo that I thought was best out of the ones you chose, it doesn’t matter if we do or do not like them. It’s not going on our wall, it’s going on yours.
In any case, I know that the people that sent these photos in thought that their photo was great for one reason or another. Maybe it was a personal memoir, maybe they just liked the way it looked or reminded them of something great. Either way, it’s your choice for these photos.
I’m sorry you have to get such crap from people for making your own decision. Guess that’ll teach you to be nice, eh?
Tough Tough Tough.
Came down to which Wes to go with.
Chose Wes Frazer.
Best Of Luck.
I didn’t vote for it, but I definitely think the Andre the Giant photo should be 2nd.
I voted for Erik Schmahl. I’m such a sucker for a lovely horse photo.
I don’t understand all the negativity. I entered, I didn’t get chosen. Big deal. It’s all in good fun and for the sake of photography. Just enjoy it.
PUSHINSKY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!¡
Congrats to the top 10!
I voted for Richard Lam’s image of that adorable couple, how could I not
& thank you Day19 for giving us all the opportunity at this:)
and for those who are bitter about not being chosen… BITE THE BULLET
These are some really good photos indicitive of the Day19 style, amped for those people. Even though I did not make it, I would like a parting prize of a Burritto, and the wrapper, filled with the dreams of a 5D.
just one thing what is wondering me-is that stuff considered art?!? modern/trendy emo art I guess…did the composition matter here at all-the picture from marina rosso is in my opinion a total crash and beyond anything I would call esthetic-my 12 year old son who never held a camera in his hand would take a picture like this probably even better-I’m not bitter that my picture/s wasn’t choosen I’m just shocked about the choosen ones-now I feel that every single picture I submitted was way too good for this contest-anyways, the winner of this camera will certainly need it to improve the quality-I just feel kinda sad for this wonderful camera-like its getting raped in the hands of people with such artistic talent:)
anyways, the best for the winner-hope he/she is using it wisely!
these photo are not so good…. is missing something
I voted for number 6. excellent framing. though all of the photos are incredible. cheers to everyone who got picked.
sidenote. i know this is photo contest but I cant help but comment about @crobs808. anyone that can honestly say things like in this day and age (let alone think it) needs to take long hard look in the mirror and figure yourself out. absolutely unreal. I really do feel sorry for you, that your thinking process is so backwards. step out of your christian bubble and see the world for what it is and not how its “supposed” to be.
congrats to all of he finalists!
they are all such lovely work,…
not only being inspired but humbled as to how much talent there is
…around the world!
to those who are able to criticize these artists and not show the upmost respect- i hope from this you are able to be reminded of the real meaning of art.
art
–noun
1. the quality, production, ***expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance.
jeremy and claire, you both have always been a huge inspiration to me,…thank you for trying to bring a community to photographers together through this:)
sending love from nashville,…hope to be back in la very soon!
haha,
can you please post CROBS808’s photos, there are no links on his ever so insightful blog. The internet does funny things to people, but thanks for having this contests – I think it is a brilliant idea and Brett Rhoades portrait is beautiful (that baby knows whats up).
@crobs808 Thanks to you I know who to vote for. If someone with your taste level gets offended then the art doing something right.
“lol. a picture of a basketbal goal outside a cheap house?” yes, thats right! Thats what America can look like. They were serious, I’m serious and you are confused and jealous you didn’t get picked to even make the top 10. Yes, thats right its not 5 you forgot to count with your other hand.
I think that from now on anyone who is talking shit on the photographers we chose has to link to their own photos that are so much better. Deal? Thats at you Michael S. & CROBS808. My favorite comment that I wish I didn’t delete (but bothered me because they wished harm on our son) was directed at day10… at least get the the web address right!
Love,
J+C
allright here is the link to my pictures-I told you that I’m not frustrated/bitter or whatever that you guys didn’t choose my picture/s I’m just shocked what you choose because I don’t really find anything good on these pictures (my personal opinion)-and we should be all able to tell what we feel, right?
but what really matters is it was extremely nice of you guys to make this contest-we can discuss till we die what art is or how art should look like-fact is these pictures are imo not good others like you guys see it different and that’s fine!
cheers

hmmm?
hi! this really is a great competition – i voted! and wold like to point our that the current leader has captured a terriffic image – no dispute – but the huge element of luck there should be considered. We need to remember that some of the other photographers have actually put themselves in the situation to capture thier moments in time and this should be commended! I like the final choices by Marije Kuiper, Marina Rosso, Richmond Lam and Wes Frazer…it was a toughie to decide on who to vote for – i think we should all take the time to decide before leaping in and choosing our most appealing shot.
Great competition – you must be nice people! good luck all finalists!
P.S Michael S – I see no link
was it for Day19 only? could Day 19 perhaps post this elusive link? xx
damn…i didn’t get in
I don’t agree with Michael S. above (just for the sake of it) because there photos are good .. maybe we all should have watched your work before submiting something
I Vote
laura, just click on my name and you’ll see it…or try this
http://www.flickr.com/photos/24570494@N06/?deleted=3728961658
good luck!
p.s. and don’t forget what I said we can discuss about what art is until we die…was just my personal opinion not more not less:)
anyone who has a photo of andre the giant is a winner! j+c, awesome contest. so good to see you guys doing something good.
you guys are winners, too!
geez everyone take a chill pill. Its based on nothing else but personal taste. Just because it doesn’t wow you doesn’t mean its not worthy. I mean I think half the photography I see in modern art museums is crap, but I know other people who love it. I love Marina Rosso’s shot, the composition is amazing, but in the end i voted for what I would want on my wall, and the one that appeals to my aesthetic the most was Wez Frazer…
P.S. Michael S. I wish you could see how ridiculous you sound. Have you ever even looked at the website of DAY19 to see what kind of photography they do and might find appealing. (ie. not over-commercialised crap) You obviously completely missed the point. Frankly if you are serious about photography I’m amazed that you can’t see the beauty and skill in the composition of Marina Rosso’s shot…
You are indeed completely entitled to your own opinion, however there’s no need to be such an arrogant jerk.
There are 2 photos here that I think do not belong in the list, all the others I would be happy to have shot myself. My photos didn’t get picked because better photos were on offer.
That’s life, I’ll keep on shooting. Props for organizing this great competition, my vote is cast!
Ted Pusha!! the shot of the giant is a classic the black and white conjurs up a lost era the others have no emotion wes frazier? it a picture if FOG!!
Marina Rosso
Thanks for the contest… no matter who wins it, Day19 will get a great print!
If we’re talking what canvas I want on my wall – Jo Galvin’s all the way
They are all very good, may the best man win
Sorry you guys are getting such a hard time for doing something nice. I know art can be divisive and everyone has their own opinion and taste but its your camera, your decision, your wall that the photo will be hanging on. I think you did a great job. Thanks for running the contest and being so generous, and good luck to the finalists!
i had to go with Ted Pushinsky. It’s Andre, timeless classic. Great stuff all the way around and a great “contest.” Although tough to have an art competition if you ask me…we all win.
Big ups to Day19. Thanks for always giving back to the people. Don’t sweat the haters, they are just bitter losers. Number 10 was my favorite.
Nice shots! Looks like I need to work on my photography more. These shots are amazing!
Almost all of these photos were fantastic. For those Negative Nancies making a fuss, calm down. Just because you don’t consider them art, doesn’t mean other people don’t. Besides, is beauty not in the eye of the beholder?
I voted for Brett Rhoades because I’m a sucker for photos of babies, and that one made me smile. Congrats and good luck to all the finalists, though. And Props to Day19 for having this contest and supporting the art. Much love.
Wes!
Wes Cummings!
Mary!!!! YESSS!!!
Loved the opportunity you guys offered us! I would have loved to see one of my pictures up there, but, it is what it is! Personally, I wasn’t all that impressed with the choices, but everyone has their tastes, which is fine! Perhaps I’m biased because I’m a surfer, but Wes Frazer’s pic is REALLY the most interesting photo up there! I’d hang that on my wall any day! Go Frazer!
they were obviously chosen because they each radiate a certain aura. the problem is that it’s difficult to compare the adventurers in Lorden’s photograph with the brilliant blue and white contrast, to the man buried in the dark records of his past by Marije, or to the subtle unnaturalness of the natural scenery in Erik Schmal’s photo.
The problem with you haters is that you aren’t looking INTO the photographs; you are merely looking at them.
In my opinion, each of these is unique, displays certain focus, thoughtful angle, depth, and character.
A picture is worth a thousand words… A photo is worth a thousand thoughts.
Picture 8 is by far my favorite…….it is an overcast Sunday with absolutely nothing to do! It brings back a FEELING not just a memory! Great job Wes I hope you win!!!!
Wow. I, too, am bummed that my work wasn’t picked. I really could use a nice dig slr. But COME ON PEOPLE! It was a contest! You were not guarenteed to win! I’m sure most of these people hadn’t even heard of Day19 before. Yet they think it’s okay to shit all over their choices. Babies.
Whoever made threatening comments towards Eli is monster. We are all glad you didn’t get picked.
Thanks to J & C for doing this!
I’m rooting for Marina Rosso. Stunning!
TED PUSHINSKY ALL THE WAY!!!!!
who wouldn’t want Andre the Giant on their wall?
taste is subjective, it’s their wall, their contest and their camera. they could have just sold it on Craigslist.
WOW MARIJE KUIPER!!! THIS PIC IS AMAZING!!
BOOOOOO on all the dissers!!!! If you can’t accept that these are INCREDIBLE photos, then you need to go get pooped on by a bird! Go have your own contest if you’re so appalled! <3 to Day19!!!!!!!!!!
First off, I just want to say thank you to Day19 for even considering my photograph for the Top 8. I was excited to see I had made it, but even more excited to see the other 7. Everyone has something really great to offer in this contest including people who didn’t make the Top 8.
To: crobs808
I’m sorry that none of these photos fit your taste, but youre clearly bitter that none of your breathtaking photographs made it.
As for the “picture of a basketbal goal outside a cheap house”, if you have paid any attention thats the one I submitted. And yeah the house is cheap, but it’s a very beautiful historic part of town in Atlanta that has plenty of substance and means a lot to me and many other people, but gets a lot of shit for being somewhat dangerous to live in. It’s also part of an ongoing series I have been doing.
You are clearly unaware that photography is about the emotion and feeling a photograph can give to the viewer.
If a “artist” can’t learn to respect others art for what it is then you aren’t an artist at all. Go to make more HDR photos.
I voted for Wes Frazer ’cause he deserves it. It’s the best photo. But i also loved #6, Marina Russo’s pic because of the catchy framing.
I voted, and I think you guys are awesome. This was a great idea. Makes me wish I was a photographer so I had use for such a nice prize.
I’m a little underwhelmed at the final choices, except for a couple of pictures, but art is subjective. I don’t think this makes me a “hater” or that I’m “bitter” as some people have been saying…it’s just my personal opinion. I love day 19’s work (and this contest idea) and congratulations and good luck to all of the finalists.
Some of these comments are brilliant.
I should read more Christian blogs.
Charlie.
#3 Ted Pusha all day!!!!!!!!
i think this competition was a fanastic idea. incredibly generous in deed. as an art producer i commission photography on a daily basis. so i took notice of this competition from a professional point of view to spot some young talent. unfortunately, either the standard of entry was low or the quality of judging wasn’t to great. apart from one or two shots i’m really disappointed with this a final list. mediocre is the word
love love love ALL of these photos.
just take a moment to click on each one and soak it in. you’ll fall in love, too.
also, please note: day19 clearly states that they chose the photos that they would want to hang on their wall at home. the end. what the hell more could you want? either you enjoy their taste or you don’t. quit hating.
voted for wes frazer because i simply love that photo- it makes me feel things.
I’m definitly not overwhelmed by the pictures that were chosen. But I really like the direction of some of these photographs. Especially the one that Wes Frazer took. My Vote btw. The comments are partly ridiculous. I think if ppl don’t like these photographs, they should be allowed to say it. But it’s also a matter of respect, how you choose your words and express your opinion!
Anyway, thanks for the contest! Great Idea!
PS: Was this a national contest? Seems kinda like it.
Seriously? 105 comments? that’s more than when we posted the news about Eli being born! And 102 more than our last post of our photo of Madlib gracing the cover of Wire. We do love each of these photos and wold be proud to have any one of them big on our wall.
And all the criticism is great, I’m sure all the photographers appreciate feedback.
Oh sorry, just noticed there is somebody from Europe in the Top 10!
Good Luck everyone!
Marije Kuiper, very nice pic, gives me a melancholic feel!
This is so awesome, I can’t wait to see who wins. I voted for Brett Rhoades because his photo reminds me of the James Agee/Walker Evans book “Let Us Now Praise Famous Men”:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Let_Us_Now_Praise_Famous_Men
The photo of Marije seems like time stands still and gives a feeling rebellious.
The picture of the woman sitting on the porch is so real… I love this picture… it somehow set’s the stage for life. It simply puts life of the human race into perspective. Excellent shot.
zzzzzz. frazier ftw.
richmond!richmond!richmond!richmond!richmond!
P.S. Sarah Barber…well I don’t think that I’m a arrogant jerk just because I said my opinion-and please let me know what you understand as commercial photography?!
just for your information Sarah here are 5 of my absolute favorites what I would hang on my wall:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/16536699@N07/3059789072/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/mytripsmypics/1522495532/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/16536699@N07/3227860475/
http://bighugelabs.com/onblack.php?id=2064876531
http://www.flickr.com/photos/benh1/2737463684/
and yes I checked the website from DAY19 before I entered the contest but I thought they would pick a wider variety of styles-just as example david lynch the director (DAY19 took a fantastic portrait shot of him) is a fan of rammstein and when you look at his stlye/work you wouldn’t think that as well, right?! so what I wanna say is we can not by looking at someones work judge what he/she would love (hang on his wall) especially when we consider ALOT of artist on this planet get inspirations from MANY different styles!
cheers
Wes Frazier Please.
HEY JUST WANTED TO SAY BRETTS PICTURE IS AWESOME! VOTE 4 BRETT RHOADES!!!!!!
Photo number nine—Wes Frazier !!!!!!
Props to Jeremy and Claire for being so generous. What a wonderful selection chosen. Good luck in life to everyone, chosen or not. ps. The haters should have a contest for their own cameras if they have such a problem. I always love to see personal preferences.
: )
hee marije TOPPER!!
i’m really surprised the jo galvin piece doesn’t have more hits. for me, that photograph would be a gem on my wall. it’s very anonymous which is probably what pulls me into it. i think all the photos are great choices that reflect the weiss style very much. high 5 for having a good contest…
and high 5 to all the people that wrote negative comments searching for ansel adams. you won’t make it very far.
“wes frazier? it a picture if FOG!!”
hey buddy, the boat just left…guess you missed it. his is hands down the most striking photograph in the final selection.
First, I think this was a wonderful opportunity and a very generous gesture on the part of Day 19 to give an aspiring photographer a chance to get one step ahead towards reaching their dreams and goals. I’m sure it was very difficult to narrow the entries down to eight finalists but your choices were based on your “eye for art” and personally I think you made great choices. But what seems to be overlooked is the fact that this is a contest sponsored by you and you alone. You are donating your own camera in exchange for a print for your own use and enjoyment. You have graciously allowed the “public” to vote on the finalists to select the photo that will grace your walls and give the winner a chance to get closer to their dreams.
I would like to address CROBS808. Your first comment is “a picture of a basketball goal outside a cheap house?”. Is that what you see? “A picture of a family climbing up a sand dune?”. Those two comments make it very evident that you are very far from having the ability or insight to judge a photo or recognize art and the fact that what appeals to one person may not appeal to the next. I decided to visit your blog and your entries confirm the fact that you are a total bumbling idiotic sap and your “Christianity” is a joke as evidenced by your comments on homosexuality as well as the fact that you are extreemly judgemental about your fellow man. You are the reason so many true Christians leave organized religion.
Okay. So you are not going to have anything else to do with Day 19. There were freakin 8000 entries. Who cares? You have just drawn attention to yourself by being a whiny, arrogant self-absorbed sap. And now everyone is reading your blog and realizing even more what an idiot you are. It’s probably the most views you have ever had seeing that you have 0 comments on every entry. And maybe before you continue with critiquing the work of others maybe you should spend your time flying in economy and coach brushing up on your grammar, spelling and punctuation.
As to you AND Michael S., your pores are oozing bitterness. It’s very obvious otherwise you would not have not such a big deal out of this contest.
I’d buy that #1 print and build houses for the poor people of new orleans with the proceeds!
For some reason I can’t vote!! My husband already voted on this computer, but if it counts, I vote for photo #2!!!
Please count my vote!
WoW, super hard. I absolutley love Marije Kuiper photo.
But when it comes down to a framed pic on my wall, Had to go with Wes Frazer.
Super difficult though.
Marije, you(r photo) kicks ass
“Veteran, black and white photographer, Ted Pushinsky has been wandering the streets and documenting the lives of fellow SanFranciscans for the past 27 years. His images have the ability to translplant you into the precise moment that the shot was taken with his honest and raw and point and shoot approach”
quote: http://www.lifelounge.com/Ted-Pushinsky-Photography.aspx
Yeah he needs this camera bad.
I vote for Richmond Lam, He is the best.
Richmond. Richmond. Richmond
wow Photo#10-Richmond Lam, It is so awesome & impressive.
The picture from photographer Brett Rhoades delivers such powerful thoughts and images of beauty in the midst of a hard life. The expressions on both faces speak volumes.
NL FTW
Een prachtige foto!!!
Great Photo, Marije!
Een Gave foto van Marije Kuiper!!
Marije Kuiper
Well done….Good luck, Marije!
its getting really close..
Hey Marije,
your picture is the best, I vote for you!
I think it’s a realy nice man, standing behind the desk.
Where do you find such a nice man, in such a bedraggled and out of date store? I like it very much! not that I am a photo-expert, I just like it the most.
After you, I think Brett Rhoades her picture is also very nice. Well done Brett!
Good luck Marije with your sentimental picture!
I really like it!
See yah
Rein
Marije Kuiper Rulez!!!!
Sorry, but now that I have seen all the pictures enlarged, I don’t understand why Wes Frazer gets so much votes. I do like the picture as a Windows wallpaper, so much space for your icons!
No really, together with the picture of Wes Cummings, I find them the worst pictures in this contest. No sensation at all.
Whell, that’s my view. Nevertheless, good luck everybody!
Marije Kuiper ruuuullleeezzz big time!!!!
I vote for Wes Cummings
RICHMOND LAM. I want this big on my wall. It speaks of love and it is a symbol of love we want to relate to. RICHMOND LAM.
Goooooo Marije!!!!
MARIJE KUIPER DESERVES TO WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We support the photo from MARIJE KUIPER and we hope that she will win the competition!!
go Marije Kuiper go!! Seriously, this contest is so exciting to monitor! Again, thanks for putting this on. Your house is gonna love to have one of these photos.
@Day19 – “blessed are those who are persecuted because of me” – this is a quote form the Bible, ever heard of it? You attacked me for having morals based on my Christian faith, and basically that is exactly what the Bible talks about. so go ahead, beat on me if you want. I am a Christian and I will take it without making fun of you in return, or cussing you out, or doing any of the other immature things that typical non-Christians do when they attack Christians. So it’s ok, go ahead and slap me around if it makes you feel bigger. I even had someone else who is a professional photojournalist look over my shoulder while I had this page open and said “There must not have been many entries if those were the final photos chosen”. Case in point. And why you brought up my morals and quoted from my personal site really makes no sense, but I guess it boosted your ego.
@Lizabeth – you called me “bitter” and you called MichaelS “bitter” as well. I guess everyone is “bitter” if they do not praise this site for its mediocre photographs. I apologize for having higher standards, and thinking photography is about more than just clicking a button on a piece of electronics.
@Wes – Photography is NOT about emotion, or what a photo means to you. Big deal how you feel about a photo. It is not up to me, as the viewer, to have to FORCE my emotions to match yours to allow me to appreciate a photograph. Rather, a photograph should be about composition, rule of thirds, use of negative and positive space, placement within a composition…is is a scientific process, not an “art” like every soccer mom who buys a $100 digital camera wants to turn it into. Gosh, I have yet to find a photographer who is not so full of himself that he can try and redefine photography on his own made up terms. Yes, that’s YOU Wes.
One basic rule of photography…I should be able to look at a photo and say ‘There was no way that could have happened by accident’…a good photo is a planned photo. Those candid wedding photojournalists…lame, just riding the coattails of WPJA.org – can’t stand it.
P.S. – the only REAL photo that made it into your top ones is the one by “Ted Pushinsky”. THIS is photography.
Non-christians ARE all potty mouths, them and their gosh darned science. See how much use you can get out of beakers and logic in the pits of hell. Don’t even get me started on all those liberals and their “ideals” and “ethics”. It really bites my bible when a good god fearing man can’t walk all over the world and get his way, what is the world coming to? Accidental, passive, raw photography is just for the youth, and ughh don’t even get me started on them.
You guys, the finalists, should really have prints for sale of these somewhere. People have been asking.
@crobs808 You ARE joking around right?
shit just got real.
hahahah jesus christ (no pun intended)
religion is stupid
Dude really has no idea does he.
You know, assuming the people who are criticizing the entries as not being worthy of making the final cut are themselves photographers, you’d think instead of just whining and saying “these photos are shit!” they’d stop and take a moment to consider what day19 might see in them. I’ll admit that I probably would not have given a second glance to some of these photos, in particular Marina Rosso’s and Wes Cummings’. But instead of letting my initial judgement be the final word, I stopped, took a moment, and really looked at them. I tried to think what could day19 have seen to be so drawn to these photos? And now I think they’re beautiful. So much good art out there isn’t about what you see at first glance, but what can sometimes be revealed in a moment of contemplation and search for meaning. And as artists ourselves, our own work (and our own selves) can only be improved by taking those moments – something that seems to be so intolerable to our society of instant gratification.
if anyone wants to buy/trade for a print you can contact me at erik@makemagicreal.com. i can sneak into the campus darkroom and dip some dektol or figure a way to do some archival digital prints. Day 19, 4,000+ people have scowered these images! that blows my mind, thanks so much for throwing this little shindig. Andre has a posse, and i am of it.
You guys need to make a list of the best comments from the contest also!
Nice- I have been a fan of that Ted Pushinsky photo for a while, love his work… Got my vote.
@crobs808
“Rather, a photograph should be about composition, rule of thirds, use of negative and positive space, placement within a composition”
HAHAHAHA! Are you kidding me? Seriously? did you get that sentence out of your tech school art book? the rule of thirds is such bullshit!
I realize im only 23 and that i still have a lot to learn about photography, but please don’t try and give us all a lesson on the basics of photography here. Wait, let me guess “i dont know the basics of photography right?” How can you call me arrogant when you have never met me? Nor did I tell you how you should feel when looking at my photographs.
Funny how there are 146 comments and counting and none of us have yet to see a single photograph you have taken. You’re a bitter old man and i feel sorry for you.
I can’t believe you are judging my photography based on one photograph… let’s see yours.
@Wes – the rule of thirds is BS?…and you are 23?….well, those two things alone explain ALL your comments. nothing else needs to be said on that.
Some great pictures up there. You’ll have a worthy winner. Great competition, too – and some of the comments on this thread are worth the price of admission alone. Some people are so damn precious about their pictures!
crobs808 – you are a master satirist. Oh, and when you finally come out of the closet we’ll all be here for you.
I hardly ever comment on these things but reading some of the questionable/hateful comments on here is disgusting. Let’s look at the situation here:
1. you have two talented people who have been lucky enough (let’s not mention hard work) to do what they love, create great work and get paid for it.
2. those people say “you know what ‘ we have this camera that we no longer use and there’s all these people that think it’s the equipment that is keeping them from making it as a pro so lets have a contest so people can get there work out there and give one lucky person a FREE camera’” Innocent enough.
3. Those same people get 1000’s of submissions and spend their free time looking at them when they could be spending that time getting paid, having a picnic in the park, looking at the stars, hanging out with their son, sitting on the couch watching a dodger game drinking a beer(although as a Giants fan I think that would be a bad choice) etc..You get the point.
4 They finally widdle those selections down to 10 and post them on their blog.
5. And that is when the negative waves start to crash from people who were mad that they did not make the top 10. So what do they do? Belittle the people who made it. Pathetic.
This is the problem with the web. People can just surf around and feel good about themselves because they think their work is better then everyone else’s not really having to interact with real people or defend/present their work in person. Part of making it at any profession, especially one as competitive as photography, is being a good person who “plays well with others”.
Sorry for the long rant but it just makes me wonder what kind of life people have when they waste precious time in the day to hate.
Thank you Day 19 for this contest and being a positive presence on the web to people who aspire to have what you have.
And I think all 10 are great but Wes Fraser and Brett Rhoades are particularly great. You two could not pick 5 so I can’t pick 1!
@crobs808 – Did you just say: “a good photo is a planned photo. Those candid wedding photojournalists…lame”
Then follow up by saying: “the only REAL photo that made it into your top ones is the one by “Ted Pushinsky”. THIS is photography.”
Ted’s entry SCREAMS candid, shot from the hip photojournalism. There’s no way in hell that shot was planned.
The picture of Marije tells a story. The other pictures are just moment with no sentimental value. The picture of Wes is nice, but just like any other picture. So, think smart and out of the box. Vote MARIJE!
Xx Robert/Robin
@crobs808
i still have yet to see one single photograph you have taken…
@crobs808
here ya go man…

Wes Frazer!
Thanks for posting all the comments. Saw on Twitter you were raving about the cat fights, I think it’s great. Nothing like a contest to create a bit of conversation.
I just think photos are subjective, and people can like what they want. Heck my mom doesn’t like all my pics and shitty works hang on her wall, but I’m not going to punch her over it.
Galvin, Cummings and Frazer are my top 3.
Honestly, I think crobs808 is just saying whatever he knows will get people to react. He’s a troll and should just be ignored.
Very tough Lover. I see why its been so stressful, they’re all really amazing photos.
if you’d like a print please contact me at wesfrazer@gmail.com

wesfrazer.org
thanks for all the votes and kind words (excluding crobs808)
i voted for my own image 666 times!
I vote for the no1: Marije Kuiper!
Unfortunately we haven’t had the time to read through all these comments but I did delete a couple posts that said @crobs808 is this or that. I don’t believe in only saying nice things about people, but lets keep it creative!
@crobs808 I would be interested to hear what you have to say about our work, just for shits and giggles. I know everyone has their own opinion on what makes a good photograph, that’s the point of this whole contest. But it blows my mind how anyone even ended up on our blog that thinks photography isn’t about emotion. Or do half of you not even realize what this blog is about and just went for a free camera?
Go, Marije..!
He Marije,
Great picture, and already in third position.
Keep on going
Albert
JO GALVIN is the best photographer. Ever.
I just wanna say thank you to Day19 for this wonderful and generous contest. It’s a total honor to be part of the top ten, and congrats to all photographers for their good work. Also a big thank you to everyone who took the time to vote for their favorite. Keep it positive and keep shooting!
Photo 5 – Marije Kuiper !!!
Marije,
Good luck!
I love that crobs shits all over “unplanned” photographs and yet his favorite is a candid of andre the giant. im sure that was a “planned” studio shot. way to make no sense, buddy.
To Wes Cummings:
I felt compelled to write this after seeing some of your replies here. You seem to be letting trivial criticism get to you a bit much. If you ever plan on pursuing a career in photography, one thing you’re going to need is tough skin. While I admire your passion, you cant just hit the internet comments every time someone says they don’t like your work. That’s life, and that’s certainly something you’ll have to get used to.
I, personally, liked your photo and voted for it, but almost wish I could take the vote back now. I feel like someone with a more “professional” attitude should win the camera. Your comments are making you come of as defensive, mean, and almost a little cocky. People are allowed to not like your work, and there will be people that don’t like your work. I know you said you’re young, but that’s really no excuse to act like a baby when someone says anything but positive stuff about your photos.
In closing, I see potential in your work, but you’ll never reach that potential if you don’t learn how to USE criticism instead of letting it piss you off. You also need to learn to take the high road. I know some of the comments have been rude and bitter, but be the bigger person and just ignore those. Responding to them only makes you seem equally as low and bitter. I hope you’re able to take my comments constructively.
I can’t even imagine trying to go through all the photos you guys received. I also find it hard to believe you did go through em all, because I know I wouldn’t have.
wes frazer!
eh
For my money Marina Rosso and Wes Cummings are the ones who should split the camera, maybe Wes can have it Mon./Wed/Fri and Marina can have it the alternating days.. Sunday is the sabath so camera does not work that day.
Marina’s photo reminds me of Martin Parr’s work while Wes’s photo reminds me of a modern R. Neutra, all good stuff!
@Richard
You are absolutely right. I don’t normally respond to people such as crobs808, there was just something about him that really irked me i guess.
Thank you for the vote and your advice, it was well taken. The last thing I want to be seen as is cocky and bitter, so forgive me for that. Thanks again.
All of these photos are great!
Gerard says: I like that picture of Marije Kuiper the most because the authenticity of this picture. the old man in his old shop. The lightning in this picture make this even stronger.
Photos #7 (nicholas Lorden) and #9 (Wez Frazer) are SO amazing!! Voted for 7. Seriously though, would it be possible to order some prints? If it is please get back to me somehow!
Photo # 9 gets my vote.
@Elial
contact me for prints of #9

[...] TED PUSHINSKY made the finals in a photo contest to win a camera, help him win by placing a vote! [...]
Richmond Lam captured the essence of our human frailty … Very moving and powerful.
Thanks guys for having this contest, it’s been quite entertaining to read the comments on here. Also best of luck to the finalists, truly some fantastic work on offer here. Not sure who I’m voting for…
i am voting for brett rhodes
Richmond Lam. Damn. One of the greats.
man alive!
great entrants, but my money is on Wes.
fanbloodytastic.
any chance of links to the photographers sites or blogs??!!??!
I’m voting for Marije.
Because it is the purest picture, love it!
vote pushinsky or you’re an idiot
My vote is for Marije Kuiper.

if anyone is interested in getting a print feel free to email me at brettmrhoades@gmail.com
also i really like trading work. i was wondering if any of the finalist would be interested in trading prints just for the fun of it.
also i have a few more images from a recent series i am working on that i could also make prints of @ http://www.flickr.com/photos/brettrhoades/
Marije Kuiper’s pic.. definately
Brett Rhoades’ picture is the best one there!
Loved them all particularly the image from Wes Frazer- the fog shrouding it’s intimidation over the surfers who still dare to battle with the mighty ocean despite her been clouded in this fog of doom
Wonderful – Carlos
Fun & generous contest. All good photos but, WES FRAZER, that shit is hot.
btw, I almost wasn’t able to vote. My roomate already voted on our computer.
Oh my god, that foto of Marije Kuiper is pure awesomess. If it could slap you, you would die.
I love Marije Kuiper’s photo!!! That man is fabulous, the image wonderfully captures the older generation keepin’ real.
Brett Rhoades photo I find to be compositionally interesting and relaxed in a good way. A good expression was captured on the babies face. It doesn’t look contrived at all.
I found this site via Hamburger Eyes, who’s pushing Ted’s photo of Andre, probably because it’s a wrasslin’ photo, but I don’t see anything compelling about it. The other photos look like they were taken by people just discovering digital imaging.
All things considered, there must have been quite a bit of crap in all of the other entries if these are the finalists.
moon cookies!
wes f. makes my jimmy dribble!
@ EliaL and anyone else interested in prints, email me!
nicholaslorden@gmail.com
My vote is for Wes Frazer, although there were two other pictures that I like too. That was Wes Cummings, and Erik Schmahl. All of the photos were creative, but those were my top three. I wish everyone the best of luck. Go Wes Frazer!
Wes Frazer gets my vote. Great composition, really well processed, interesting subject matter. Really strong.
WES FRAZER IS FUCKING CHEATING…. I went to school with him… I heard from a mutual friend that he’s trying to rig the competition.
Marije, de jouwe is de mooiste!
veel geluk!
kus, Arnold
The photo by Wes Frazer is absolutely stunning. And the others are nice as well, but it’s Wes Frazer who got my vote. Have i been “rigged” Burke?
Burke: I don’t know you. No cheats here. Where did we go to school?
Wes Frazer…beautiful!!!!
http://www.makemagicreal.com/photo.html
http://www.flickr.com/photos/skunkape (networking, i want to see what you make!)
just because someone asked. and i don’t think frazer is cheating, notice half of the comments on here are praising his nice composition
Surf Board Academy in Laguna Beach, CA you know that Wesly. We played water polo together remember? You de-pantsed me in the girls locker room and then all the freshmen started suckin’ us off…. remember????
Mark Randall “”"”FRAZER”"”" Huh??? If that IS your real name… Sounds like an allias to me…. *cough*Wes frazer*cough*
Burke, you’re an idiot. I happened to be the older brother of Wes.
Hmm… do I sense a little biased voting? Or do you really feel the surf picture is the best?
No matter the outcome though…. I would like a to propose a new photo contest… the winner shall receive… The Slayer lamanent!
…i don’t even know what your talking about.
Maybe you should scroll to the top of the page and look at the picture of the camera your “brother” is cheating to win, “Mark”. If that is your real name… which it isn’t… because I know the real Wes Frazer. And he has no brother.
Just got off the phone with Industrial Light and Magic. They confirmed that Wes Frazer’s picture is in fact CGI.
I see what you mean by “the Slayer Lamanent”. And apparently, you don’t know Wes very well. He actually has three half-brothers, two from his mothers first marriage and one (me) from his fathers first marriage. I’m 17 years older than him. I don’t know why i’m bothering to explain this, because it’s none of your business…who are you? I’m beginning to think this is a practical joke.
Ah… that makes a little more sense. I knew Wes didn’t have an biological brothers… He would always say that first thing in the morning before class. He would actually get up and scream it at the top of his lungs. Like “IIII HAVE NO FULL BROTHERS!!!!!”. But I guess I didn’t account for the potential half brothers. Sorry about the mistake. But fact of the matter is… you’re kinda cute when you’re angry Mark… would you wanna grab a bite to eat sometime? My treat…
Lol!…who are you, oh practical joker…and by the way, half-brothers are biological (i didn’t say step).
Whoa. that Marina Rosso photo is insanely good. I accidentally didn’t vote for it, but mang!
I can’t stop beating off to the picture of the old people… is there something wrong with me?
It is pretty obvious who the winner of the camera will be unless someone is stashing away 1000 friends or so to vote at the last minute. I think the contest was a generous gesture on the part of Day19 and for each of these eight finalists should be proud that they were chosen as finalists.
To Jon Duenas, you made a great point by stopping and looking deeper into each photo and seeing them through the eyes of the photographer.
To Richar Morales, your response to Wes Cummings was something that I am sure he will always remember in his pursuit to become a better photographer. That was exactly what he needed to hear and I am sure your words will stick with him and hopefully have a positive impact on his future encounters with criticism. His response was uncharacteristic for him. He has a good soul but still can benefit from words of wisdom as so can I. Thank you again.
Go Brett!!!!!
Wow a lot of great photos, I liked Rosso’s too. Something just kept me coming back to the surf photo. So, that’s my vote. Not easy at all.
Love the bleakness of Wes Frazer’s photo. Going with that one.
I liked them all but Wes is the best!
ooohhh, so close! you might have to call it a draw!
Wes Frazier by far
a lot of these aren’t that good. if these are the finalists i wonder what the other multiple thousand pictures looked like. oprah noods.
great photographs…
had to choose the 2nd by brett.
what time does this contest end?
I think Brett Rhoades is my favorite.
what time does contest end today?
It was supposed to end at noon. Any minute now I guess I should say. Crazy, first time I’ve looked in days and Brett and Wes are neck and neck.
you can end it now! brett is ahead!
Wes Fraser. Holla.
Go brett!!!
I (Jeremy) just cast my vote. I do love them all but I voted for Marina Rosso. It brings me back to a style of photography I’ve always loved, and the framing of the people is just too perfect.
Wes Frazer! Fo sho!
how do you vote?
Wes Frazer
noticing the votes haven’t changed in a while… is it over?
# 9 Wes Frazier for certain- I would love looking at a huge print of this every day!
Brett
Wes Frazer gets my vote!
Wes Frazer!
Brett Rhoades FTW!!!!
hello to everybody! before starting, i apologize for my bad english (i’m italian). i’ve been looking all the week at what was happening here. and i really wanted to say thanks to the people who understood my photo, and even wanted to thank those who didn’t like it but, at least, they tried to understand what there was behind. i’m not a professional photographer, but i work hard, hoping, one day, to be one.
if you want to see my work, here you can find my website, and my flickr:
http://www.marinarosso.com/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/marigelaffa/
if u have any question or critique, i’ll be happy to talk about it.
We support the photo from MARIJE KUIPER
They are all so good! Down to Wes or Marina for me!
KEEP IT GOING!
What a fun, complicated, occasionally snarky, and periodically sad set of comments. Thanks, 19, for doing this, and don’t worry about the negatives — folks sometimes just feel compelled to criticize more strongly those who are actually doing something than those who sit at home on their hands. You did a good thing. I’m clearly in a minority liking Jo Galvin’s photo, but that’s okay — I also like Brett’s, and the two Wes photos, and the rest are maybe quirky choices that depend on how heavily medicated I am on any given day. I looked at crobs808’s examples and they’re all good photos, but they’re also a different sensibility than yours. Doesn’t bother me, although it means he’s not very likely to buy my photos.
Are the above results final? When’s your next contest? #8->
congrats brett!!
Brett Rhoades
I sent you guys a email with my address to the5d@day19.com. I’ll be needing your address too! If you need me to send the information somewhere else just let me know.
Thank you everyone who supported me by voting for my picture!
Brett Rhoades
This was decided by one vote? Strange days, indeed.
Congrats, Brett! Everyone’s pictures were amazing!!! I want to know how to get my hands on Ted Pushinsky’s photo!!!!!!! hanahlafem@yahoo.com
Congratulations Brett. I love your photo. My little brother lost to you by just one vote and i thought he would win it. Amazing! But, you deserve it. Keep up the good work and many thanks to 19.
hmm.. it was 2 votes wasn’t it?
woooooow. 2 votes! that’s incredible…
Yeah! Congrats Brett… I would like to see the photos with the new camera!!!!
we always vote for the winner. great contest, day19.
Woo Hoo! Illinois State represent!
So happy for you Brett, though a little jealous that I had to buy my 5D with my loan money last year ;P
Can’t wait to see what’s up next for you… See you in the print lab!
these pics are great. and so is this site. each of the ten images offer something unique and evocative; perhaps a different reality, maybe a different truth. a different way of looking at something that has probably been overlooked on countless occasions. I swear I have glimpsed/experienced scenes similar to these through my own eyes, and dare i say it the magic was most likely unrealised. finding beauty someplace it seemingly never existed before? that has to be a good thing. what photography is about right? I dunno. I like the images tho.
Jo’s and Marina’s pics are my picks.
Well, it appears that the contest was successful. Anyone who thinks this was actually about photography is missing the boat. Day19 drove more hits to their site that ever before, and that was the whole purpose, so congrats.
It all ends with Day19’s last post to me, requesting me to critique on their photos and work, so I guess they think highly of me. And this also all ends with a post just above by Wes (actually multiple posts) where he posts his resume, and every link he has of his “fantastic” photos. I guess he needs a job or something…I don’t know why he is trying to convince me of something – seems a bit insecure and narcissistic if you ask me to try and win the approval of someone over the internet.
So in the end we are left with, not a bad taste in our mouth, but the realization that Day19 successfully drove more hits to their site, yet all of us wasted our time on this “photography” contest. (”photography” being the loose term). That poor Canon 5D…now it will never know what it means to be used to its full potential.
Because we get paid in hits? So where’s that critique? P.S. I fixed your typos.
